One of the first things I wanted to dip my hands into when I tried to get into a little bit more into makeup is learning more about primers. There are few different features when it comes to primers and bases but the way I see it, primers are more into perfecting the condition of the skin; talk about sebum-controlling or hydrating primers whereas the bases are more into the appearances of the skin or canvas for your makeup; the tone, imperfections and etc.
One of the products that I've tried in that primer category is this product from Etude House, the Zero Sebum All Day Matte Gel.
I was looking for a primer with basic function like sebum-controlling or at least balancing the water-oil level in my skin so as I was going through Korean beauty shops here in Kota Kinabalu, I've found this for a start.
Product Description:
This gel contains natural grain powder that removes sebum oil, delivering skin that feels powdery and oil-free all day. It removes first signs of sebum oil with its gentle silicon free formula.
Volume: 65ml
Packaging:
Talk about the packaging, the product comes in that white box with baby green and sunny yellow colour. I think you can tell after trying several number of sebum-controlling products, they all come in either soft turquoise or soft green colours.
There's an English product description and ingredients list on the sides of the box. I bought this from local Etude House store here in Imago, Kota Kinabalu hence the distributor sticker. 65ml for 12 months worth of usage. I don't know if I can finish the product within that time though. As I have other base/primer products to try~
The product is contained within a similar designed tube but there's only brief Korean product description printed at the back of the tube. There's also the manufacturing date printed at the top edge of the tube.
The product is sealed before opened. So it's wise to check before purchase.
As expected, from the name itself, the product comes in that transparent gel form. It's cooling, spreads easily on my facial area and doesn't leave sticky feeling at all. The finishing looks matte but it feels silky to touch.
Verdict:
When it comes to the product concept, it's more like something you could use alone right after skincare (if you're really oily skin) or if you like me (normal to oily skin), I prefer using at least toner and emulsion under this and wait for at least 10 minutes before applying this before my makeup routine. I tried applying my toner, lotion, serum and moisturiser under this primer but the moisture in my skin just lost its balance and my makeup didn't last long. Maybe I should wait longer and let all the skincare really absorbed into my skin?
But then again, the purpose of this product is to control the sebum secretion. Of course, with skincare routine that offers you sufficient moisture for your skin can prep your skin for flawless makeup application so I guess it's safe to say that this product can be useful when you don't do full skincare routine in the morning and apply your makeup after you cleansed and toned your skin. It's cooling sensation can minimise the pores and that silky texture somehow helps with the application for my foundation and refine the texture of my skin a little bit better.
Using this product together with foundation is definitely now suffice as I still need to set my base with setting powder example its sister product, Zero Sebum Drying Powder or my ultimate favourite, Innisfree No Sebum Mineral Powder. The combination of the 3 products is quite good I should say as my base can stay without touch ups up until 6 to 7 hours before I need to blot away the shine on my T-zone or just re-apply my setting powder.
All in all, I give this product 3.5 out of 5. I've tried several number of Korean base makeup primers so far and this is truly an average product. If you're looking for an affordable (in Korean won), sebum-controlling and good lasting power base primer, you may give this product a try or you can try the upgraded or probably just repackaged version of this product.
This product is retailed around RM65++ in local Etude House stores in Malaysia and around KRW10,000 in Seoul.
